Isso porque a agência usa um método de indução à chuva com iodeto de prata, uma substância que, ao ser aplicada por aviões em nuvens comuns, gera uma reação química capaz de gerar a precipitação, ou a queda da água em forma de chuva.
Em um estado com a ameaça constante de falta de água (e, em Los Angeles, são mais de seis milhões correndo este risco), a operação é controversa, mas comum .A China tentou a técnica para conter a seca em um de seus principais rios em 2022, enquanto técnicos entendem que “semear nuvens” não resolvem problemas de larga escala.
No caso da Califórnia, porém, as teorias da conspiração chegaram a ameaças físicas a técnicos da agência, atuando em campo. E-mails e ligações com xingamentos a técnicos da agência se tornaram comuns, afirmou o gerente-geral da Sawpa — que foi ao LA Times, mais tradicional jornal da região, para relatar o caso.
Em San Diego, outra região atingida por fortes chuvas, uma moradora foi reclamar sobre o tema em uma audiência pública da Câmara, de acordo com o jornal americano. “Vocês semearam essa nuvem de propósito”, ela disse, em um discurso no mês passado. “Vocês destruíram as casas destas pessoas. Eles não tinham seguro contra enchente, e vocês sabiam disso”. A Sawpa, alvo das reclamações, atua a mais de 130 km de distância de San Diego.
